On the special occasion of World Labour Day, MHD Kottayam organized an awareness programme to highlight the importance of observing World Labour Day and pass on some basic information regarding the Rights and Entitlements of labour to the interstate migrants working in Asset homes worksite, Madhavanpady, Kottayam. It was a collaborative program organized in association with two departments namely, DLSA (District Legal Service Authority and KSACS (Kerala State AIDS Control Society).

The programme began with an introductory speech by Shri. Baiju Janardanan, Project Manager, KSACS on the importance of observing World Labour Day followed by an hour class taken by Adv. Vineetha Narayan, DLSA (Who also practices law in the district court, Kottayam) on the basic rights and entitlements of a labour and all legal aspects related to it. The class was very effective as she was interacting with the workers as well simultaneously learning about their working conditions so as to know if there are happy with the rules and regulations of the management imposed on them. She asked them to be open with her and feel free to share anything which is bothering them while working. She also enquired about their stay whether it is a hygienic place to stay or not and if they’re granted leave during emergencies, does everyone have the insurance cards with them in hand so as to claim the insurance money during the accidental deaths. And one of the foremost important things she asked was whether they are provided with safety equipment’s required while carrying out any tough and risky jobs during work. None of them had any complaints in regards to her concerns and in fact they were pretty much happy with the management’s approach in ensuring safety first for all the workers. After the class got over, MHD Kotttayam concluded the programme with the vote of thanks and then in the end we all gathered together for a group photo and later sweets were distributed to all the 45 workers participated in the class by MHD Kottayam.
