In commemoration of the World Day against Child Labour, the KISMAT project organized an awareness session for interstate migrants at CRP Tiles in Punnappra, in collaboration with Vimukti Mission Kottiyam on 15th June 2023. This collaborative effort involved the Migrant Help Desks in Kollam and Kottayam. The district director of the KISMAT project Alappuzha, Fr. George, also participated in the event, which was divided into two sessions.
The first session focused on labour laws and was conducted by Mr John Sumit Jose, the District Project Coordinator of the KISMAT project in Kottayam. Following that, Ms Anju, the Vimukti Mission Coordinator in Alappuzha, raised awareness about drug abuse among adolescent interstate migrants in the second session. A total of 32 interstate migrants benefited from this program.
This initiative served as an effective platform to engage with young interstate migrants and provide them with valuable insights into the vulnerability associated with child labour and drug abuse. By providing drug awareness and prevention programs specifically tailored to the needs of adolescent migrants, and to empower with them with knowledge, skills, and support systems to make informed decisions, resist peer pressure, and lead healthy, drug-free lives. On the other hand, It is essential to address the issue of child labor and promote the well-being and rights of all children, regardless of their migrant status by making them aware of legal entitlement under the system.
