DRAEM Trivandrum in collaboration with Valiyatura Janamytri Police Station organised a
training session for parents of Hafi CHMKM VHSE School in Thiruvananthapuram. Ms.
Neha (Coordinator of DREAM Trivandrum) and Ms. Anooja R (Counsellor of DREAM
Trivandrum), Conducted a comprehensive parent training session focused on drug abuse and
addiction on 24 th June 2024. The event aimed to educate and empower parents to safeguard
their children against these dangers. The session began with an introduction by the school
principal, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement in combating drug abuse,
followed by a detailed presentation from the Valiyatura Janamytri Police Station officers
about the local drug landscape, common substances abused, and the legal consequences of
drug-related activities.
Neha, the Coordinator of DREAM TVM, highlighted various community initiatives and
support mechanisms available to parents and teenagers through DREAM Trivandrum. She
shared success stories of individuals and families who have benefited from these
interventions, reinforcing the importance of community support in preventing drug
abuse.Anooja, the Counsellor of DREAM, provided valuable insights into the psychological
aspects of drug abuse, focusing on early warning signs, effective communication strategies,
and counseling approaches to support teens struggling with substance abuse. Her talk stressed
the importance of building a strong, trusting relationship between parents and children to
mitigate the risks of drug use.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where parents practiced
conversations about drug use, discussed real-life challenges, and engaged in exercises to
identify and mitigate risk factors within the home environment. Informational booklets and
pamphlets on drug abuse prevention and local support resources were distributed to all
participants Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, and the school plans to
continue such collaborative efforts to ensure sustained support and education for parents and
students alike.
