Mobile phones are something that cannot be avoided in our day-to-day life. From the time we
wake up in the morning to the time we go to bed, the mobile phone plays an important role in
our lives. According to a survey conducted among children during the awareness classes, the
average use of mobile phones among children is two to three hours a day. Even adults use
mobile phones for more than two to three hours for various purposes. But do we notice that
this kind of overuse leads us to addiction? According to estimates, 39% to 44% of children
in India are addicted to mobile phones. Mobile addiction is the use of applications that come
within it. They can be games, social media as well as others. Among these, game addiction
and social media addiction are the most common among children. There are many games that
children are familiar with and play regularly like pub g and free fire. Daily they used to
spend more than two hours on this. There are people who use five to six hours of their day
for the same. According to the National Health Institute, children who spend more than two
hours on mobile screens or any other electronic gadgets are more likely to have mental
problems. Children who are regularly addicted to such games develop other physical and
mental problems.
Another serious issue to be addressed is the excessive use of social media. As the world
speeds up, they are evident in our lives. We are familiar with many social media platforms
like Instagram, Whatsapp, Facebook, and Twitter. All these have many positive aspects if
used properly. But there are children who fall into the pitfalls of this through unwise use.
There are many stories familiar to us that people get friendly with strangers on Instagram and
Facebook and then things go the wrong way. It is in such social media that mafias dealing
with alcohol and especially drugs are most connected. This is one of the ways most drugs are
marketed today. Many wrong love relationships and wrong personal relationships are opened
through the usage of these social media.
Movies and series are other areas that interest children. When we talk to the children we get
an idea that series like Korean ones is having a great influence on them. The amount of time
devoted to viewing them daily is very high. For the students, this they spend for these are
meant that should have set aside for studies and other extracurricular activities. Moreover, all
of these mentioned earlier are likely to turn into addiction after being used once. Because all
these things please our brains. Once we play a game, a chemical is produced inside our brain
and because of that, it gives us pleasure. And then it’s this chemical that makes us want to
play this game. So gradually we become addicted to these things. It can be seen that children
who go into addiction gradually develop physical, psychological, and social problems. Social
withdrawals and breakdowns in relationships are all part of this. Also physical problems
including eye and brain. Depression, OCD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, excessive
mediated sleep deprivation and loneliness are all clearly evident in children who use mobile
phones more than a limit.
