The Salesian Cooperators Unit of Don Bosco Veedu organized a meaningful movie night under the theme “Watch a Movie, Support a Family,” blending art, fellowship, and outreach in the spirit of Christmas. The event featured the acclaimed Iranian film Children of Heaven, directed by Majid Majidi, with proceeds from ticket sales and refreshments earmarked to support a deserving family as part of the unit’s Christmas outreach initiative.
The programme created a warm and engaging atmosphere for participants. A coffee session offered time for conversation and connection, while snacks were served during the intermission, reinforcing the evening’s sense of community. What unfolded on screen, however, proved to be the heart of the experience.
Children of Heaven tells the simple yet profoundly moving story of Ali, a young boy who accidentally loses his sister Zahra’s worn but carefully repaired shoes. Rather than a dramatic narrative, the film quietly traces the everyday struggles of a poor family, revealing shared sacrifice and moral courage. Ali and Zahra take turns wearing the same pair of shoes to school, protecting each other from embarrassment while living out the values instilled by their parents—honesty, hard work, and compassion.
Despite their own hardship, the children show empathy toward a friend in even greater need, highlighting how kindness can emerge from adversity. Many viewers were deeply moved, with several admitting the film brought them to tears.
Beyond its emotional impact, the screening prompted reflection on a deeper question: who are the “children of heaven”? For many in the audience, the answer lay in the children’s quiet virtues—innocence, patience, trust, and selfless love—echoing the biblical insight that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.
By combining cinema with concrete action, the Salesian Cooperators demonstrated how art can awaken conscience and inspire generosity. As one organizer observed, the aim was simple: to let goodness on screen inspire goodness in real life, reminding the community that small acts can help make the world more like heaven.
