Coordinator in association with Avanoor PHC’s Health Inspector and an Asha worker conducted a programme for migrant families residing in the Avanoor area as part of celebrating Mother’s Day. As the Mother’s Day falls on a non – working day it was observed two days prior so that the officials can be part of the programme as well.
On 12th May 2023, the program started with a welcome speech from Shri. Unnikrishnan, Health Inspector, Avanoor PHC followed by a session from Smt. Sruthi Menon, District Coordinator, Thrissur to the ISM families on varies topics and specifically reminding them the importance of celebrating Mother’s Day and quite often it has been noted that, a mother doesn’t receive the amount of love and respect from her loved ones which she truly deserves. In this generation, it is a well-known fact that we don’t give any consideration to them, and most of the times they are taken for granted. They are fully committed to their family and give most of their valuable time to their loved ones, and during the process she literally forgets to give time for herself. At times their well-being, both physical and mental state has been jeopardized during the process so it is very important to understand their feelings as well and appreciate the sweet moments that we share with them as there is no guarantee for tomorrow, so we should count each day that we spent with them as a blessing given by the God. After this, coordinator gave suggestions on leading and maintaining a healthy family life and also keeping a relationship fun and strong. In the end, coordinator took a brief class on menstrual hygiene explained to them the importance of taking care of menstrual hygiene, disposal of sanitary napkins and introduced them to using a menstrual cup rather than the usual pads as it has been proven that menstrual cups are more convenient, reliable and safer during periods. A demonstration was also given to the women on how to use a menstrual cup. Coordinator also explained the pros and cons of using sanitary pad, menstrual cups and tampons as well. The class was a great success, we were expecting around 50 ISMs but only 25 were present at that moment and few children as well. The females suggested if more classes could be arranged for them as it was very effective session and it can be more effective if their husbands too can attend these classes as still there are many men who don’t have any proper knowledge about menstruation, and through what all things a woman goes through during this phase of time. There were some men present during the session and they had very good feedback regarding the class as well even thought they were little uncomfortable in the beginning of the session but soon they were okay with it and responded well to the questions asked by the coordinator and seemed very assertive during the sessions.
