CONTRIBUTE TO THE FUTURE!

Since the lockdown and pandemic protocols, most of the poor and underprivileged families across the cit of Trivandrum are running out of income since they depend on their daily wage activities for their income. This has adversely affected their children’s education as well. Apart from the study materials which these children receive from their respective schools, the children nowadays are running short on notebooks for them to write down what they acquire through classes.

Don Bosco Veedu Society has put forward an initiative which ensure public participation for helping the schoolgoing children from poor financial background through buying them notebooks and essential study materials. Each child will require atleast 10 notebooks each month which cost them to an approximate of Rs.400.00 per month for their studies.

Let our children learn and perish.

World Hunger Day 2021

Trivandrum Don Bosco Veedu Society visited over 60+ families in the Amboori Kaarikuzhy tribal settlement colony and was able to witness the real conditions of the people living there.

As majority of the families depend on farming and selling the by products for their livelihood, the ongoing pandemic situation and the uneven rainfall has made their life’s even harder. Due to the above mentioned reasons their basic source of income has stopped and there once happy life has turned miserable.

We were able to provide support for these people in the form of Nutrition kits. With the help and support of public, we can continue our missions and help more and more families who are suffering similarly.

Join hands with us in these initiatives.

The initiative has been put forward by Don Bosco Veedu Society with the motto – “Eliminate Hunger”.  The government as well as other charity organisations and unions are trying their level best for feeding the COVID affected patients and the destitutes. Even then the starving people are appearing at various parts of the city.

Rehabilitating such people are effective only upto an extend as they prefer to roam around and not to be in a crowd shelter facility or camps.

The pandemic is not over yet and destitutes are still on streets facing the challenge of COVID 19. Activities are  still being carried out according to the needs.

Join us in these initiatives.

Supplying basic necessities for the people who lost their shelter and belongings.

Since the month of May, the coastal areas of Kerala has been affected by Tauktea cyclone. Many people lost their houses and are transferred to relief camps which has been organised at nearby government schools. Day to day the number of families approaching the relief camp is arising and the camp organisers reported a widespread  shortage of necessary materials.

Around1800 people are being sheltered at the relief camps at coastal areas of Trivandrum such as Pozhiyoor, Poonthura, Shangumugham and Valiyathura. Rest of the affected are being accommodated at houses of their respective relatives since the sea has swiped off their houses.

Don Bosco Veedu Society in collaboration with BREADS Bangalore supplied basic provisions such as Bed sheets, Toothbrushes, Toothpastes, Soaps, Medical Kits, Clothes and Towels for 500 victims who are currently residing at  relief camps at Pozhiyoor.

The volunteers and staff actively participated in distributing the supplies at relief camps despite of the crucial situation of COVID 19. We are hoping to supply more provisions for the rest of the victims at every camps set across the coastal areas in the district of Trivandrum.

Hi everyone! It’s Ariane again!

Today I will share with you, my experience of creating, learning and performing a mime performance with the interns of Don Bosco Nivas:

What was supposed to be a normal Monday, spent in researching and writing a paper about child screen addiction, was transformed when Tony asked me if I wanted to see a mime performance. I said yes, thinking I was going to watch, but I soon understood that I was actually to be performing in the show. A group of interns, led by Devi and Ancy, had decided to create a mime show that was to be performed on Saturday morning at the train station.

Monday was then spent on brainstorming ideas, trying different scenarios, and learning the ones we thought were good. At the end of the day, we had settled on 6 scenes: one about intervening when a woman is being harassed on the train, two about throwing your trash in the trashcan and cleaning the platform, one about public toilets and lastly two about rescuing lost and begging children.

During the week, we met all together (seven interns, one of the children staying at Don Bosco, myself  and the two child help desk workers that supervised the project) for a couple of hours every day, rehearsing again and again the show to be perfect on the big day!

On Saturday, the big day was here at last! All dressed in black, we all went to the child help desk in Trivandrum central station, for the makeup. Getting all of our faces white, with the traditional black brows and red lips, took at least an hour! Once we were all ready, we went on platform 1 to perform our show. There was music, guitar, singing, funny mimes, sad mimes and a lot of talent!

The show was a success, all the travelers took a few minutes to stop and watch us. Learning this way how to contact the child desk if needed. After the show, workers of the child desk, a policeman and someone from Don Bosco, made speeches about the importance of this child help phone number and desk, and the amazing work these people did in the two years of existence of the Trivandrum central Child help desk.

Hi Everyone! I’m Ariane, a new workaway volunteer from France. After finishing my occupational therapy studies in France, I decided to go traveling for a year before coming home and searching for a work. After traveling for 4 months, I started to miss working with kids, so I decided to stop for 3 weeks in Don Bosco Nivas open shelter  home to help the kids and the association the best I could.

On my first day, after meeting all the kids and lovely staff and chatting with Ali and Jordan about their time here, I was lucky enough to accompany Tony to one of the ENLIGHT@schoolsessions. And so, we hopped in the car, and went to pick up three women from the slum. We all squeezed on the back seat and started a long and happy ride to the Sai Krishna Public School. We arrived an hour later, during the ride, we laugh a lot, eat the delicious snacks the women were kind enough to share with us and they explained the project to me.  After arrival and a quick lunch at the school, it was time for the 3 teachers to start the LED bulb workshop. The kids were so sweet and focused, they listened to the women with great respect and attention which moved the women a lot. The temporary teachers were really patient, competent and pedagogue. They explained to the kids how LED bulbs worked and what each part was called… Then come the fun part with screwdrivers, hammers and soldering iron. I help as I could, distributing the different pieces and taking pictures of focused faces and happy smiles! After a couple of  hours each kid had a working LED bulb, they could proudly take home.

I then had a little time to chat with the kids, after the Class “France?!, world cup champion! Do you know Griezmann? (sorry no, I might be the only French who didn’t watch the world cup final, oups!)”. The kids decided to show me their own Eiffel Tower: a 110feet high Sivalingam that we could see, emerging from the trees, from one of the school windows.

As none of us ever went to visit it, Tony decided on a little field trip after leaving the school. The visit was surprising as this Sivalingam host an overly decorated 7 floors temple. After the visit, it was time to go home. The ride was quieter as everyone was tired but really happy about this afternoon.

Another day in the life of a UK volunteer (KEEN)

Hello to you all. It’s been a bit quiet on the volunteering front as we have been working hard to draft our proposal for our case against child sexual abuse. With 3000 children being abused in Kerala annually, this is most certainly a project that needs funding… they are only the reported figures, we all know there are many unreported incidents. We have been writing up the proposal and subsequent support work for Don Bosco to go for funding so keep your fingers crossed for them.

Supporting the KEEN (Don Bosco Veedu) Project

Today was not one of those quiet proposal writing days. Tony popped his head round the door and in his usual happy and enthusiastic way, invited us to join him in a very positive project for the KEEN contract. As part of KEEN they carry out family support plans which ascertain the needs of each family in the slum and put together a support plan to help.

What KEEN (Don Bosco Veedu) did

Don Bosco have teamed up with Christ Naga school and together they do many things to support the wider community, including up-skilling and fundraising. It’s all part of a bigger picture to give back to the wider community and support each other. Seeing this project in all its forms has been a real eye opener for me and one that has brought me to cry happy tears on several occasions.

KEEN had identified Gopi and his family as in need for support. Gopi and his wife had their own little set up on the streets of Trivandrum repairing things such as shoes, umbrellas bags and many other small items. Gopi had gotten ill and needed major surgery on his stomach. During the time it took him to recover, the government had mistaken his post as deserted and disposed of the tools of his trade (they are commonly wrapped up and left neatly on the street side where they do their work). Gopi had no money to replace them and no way of getting them back. His entire life’s trade had just gone, resulting in feelings of worthlessness and no way of making an income.

The school agreed to support KEEN in purchasing the items Gopi needed to start up his business again and today was a very special day of gifting these things to him. Gopi and his wife had lost their way for 5 years! They said their thanks with tears running down their faces. It was such a sad but happy experience and one I am so grateful to have been included in. If Don Bosco were not working in this community, this family would have gone unnoticed and they would have continued to suffer alone. This is the impact of this project, I honestly have no words!

Naturally as there were two Western foreigners and a team of supporters and school children, many of the locals has stopped in their tuktuks and bikes to see what was going on. This in itself had brought more business and interest to Gopi and as we left someone was using his services once again.

My reflection

Getting to be a part of this organisation really has given me an experience of India I could only have dreamed of. We are getting an inside out experience, rather than outside in and have been welcomed time and time again by a very humble and kind community of humans.

Please see video blog here 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFQmn6yMS90

My Day in Karimadom Slum

Hi everyone, hope you are all having an amazing day! This is my second post for my volunteering at Don Bosco and I am feeling a bit more confident in writing since I received such lovely feedback on my last post and I think it shows…maybe 🙂

What my day looks like:
Something that is really good about Don Bosco is that they are pretty easy going when it comes to scheduling your time here. As long as you put in the time and effort to do what you say you are going to do, you have no other schedule. So we get up when we want…which is usually around 8:30am and are up and ready to work from 9am. They really do encourage involvement and because of this we have done so much and been a part of so much already. This leads me to my next segment.

Visiting Karimadom Slum:
Today, as always, was another awesome day of absolute involvement in this charity. We were invited by Tony to join him in visiting Karimadom slum, Trivandrum. The Keen project has teamed up with the children of Christ Nagar School to teach their elders (parents and grandparents) how to read and write. This was something they could have only dreamed at receiving at their stage in life having missed out as children. The program is ongoing and the progress is evident. The women of the slum were really engaged and had workbooks where they were writing what they were taught. The children were also marking it. They really involved me and showed me how they had learnt to write their names. The children then taught me how to write my name and the syllables used to write it… Aah Li. Naturally I asked them to teach me how to write all the names of the people I love. During all of this people had come out of their homes to meet us and say hello, which I absolutely love about this culture. The level of friendliness is unlike anything I have ever experienced.

Extra Awesomes!
Whilst we were waiting for the children to arrive Sudah invited us into her flat and we had a look around. Sudah and her family are one of the lucky ones who have been provided with housing by the government on a project to make flat complexes for the people of the slums to live in rather than shacks which are much cleaner, safer and less susceptible to floods. She then offered us a drink of lemon and sugar which I accepted. As Tony rightfully pointed out you have to show love and trust to make positive in this world!

Anywho, moving on…Sudah has been provided with the tools and knowledge by Don Bosco to make paper bags. She makes these to earn a small living. The bags cost 7 rupees to make so after they are sold she gives 5 back for materials and makes a profit of 2 rupees. She showed us how to make paper bags and we all sat in a circle and made one from scratch. They said mine was super, which made me feel super…I was feeling great at that point as the actual making is not that easy.

My reflection:
In an area which is rife with crime, neglect and violent abuse Don Bosco are working to up-skill the families so they have a way of making a living and earning extra income to contribute to their household. In the midst of this they up-skilled me too! Everyone we met were happy and welcoming and I’m truly humbled to meet them all. This is such a lovely example of how a slum can be transformed to support the poorer classes of India and foster a more positive and brighter future.

As always Wildfire Word Kindness has covered this by way of video blog so please check it out on the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx7pGbfvkII
